Band Karate

What exactly is Band Karate?  Band Karate is a way for student musicians to demonstrate their advancing skills and knowledge through a series of testing for karate 'belts'.  The belts start at white (beginner), yellow (advanced beginner), green (intermediate), blue (advanced intermediate), red (advanced), and black (master).  Once black is achieved, students can continue to do special projects to earn degrees of their black belt (1st degree through 9th degree).

The belt requirements for the first three belts, along with the corresponding etude, can be downloaded below, along with the belt testing rubric.  Karate testing will be held periodically and announced ahead of time in class.  There is no cost to test, and students may retake a belt test every testing period until they pass.  Once passed, the student earns a stripe of the appropriate color around the handle of their instrument case.  Students retain their rank during their entire tenure in band grades 5-12.  Each belt comes with some added bonuses: extra credit points, "drop low test score" coupons, lapel pins for the band shirt collar, etc.
